The Sunshine Baseball Club was founded in 1938 and is the oldest sporting club in Sunshine. George Kirby was President for 25 years and he had the only picture theatre in Sunshine from 1930 – 1980. Later son Roc Kirby, life member and patron of Village Roadshow fame.
Later Grandson John Kirby, life member and also of Village Roadshow (still our major sponsor). Followed by Pat Dalling, President for 17 years and for many years had the only proper full-time sports store in the 1950s-1980s in Sunshine.
There have had many Australian and Victorian representatives over the years, the notables:
John Galloway, Helm’s Award Winner with South Australia (the top Australian player award), Jon Deeble, (Australian Coach and the holder of 3 Gold Rings for World Series wins with the Boston Redsox) and Graeme Lloyd, (Australian Coach and the holder of 2 Gold Rings playing for the New York Yankees). This is absolutely world class!
The club has won many division one and grade Premierships over the years with the help of players like Don Knapp, Russell Spear, Matthew Kent and Lindsay Barnes. SBC can also boast back to back Division One Premierships for our first Women’s team in the 1994-95 & 1995-96 seasons.
Much of the success can be attributed to the emphasis the club places on the junior development program. During the past 25 years we have had 8 players graduate through our junior teams to gain scholarships to play in the United States. A further 25 players have been selected in State representative teams and have been on interstate carnivals. Of these, 6 young people have been selected in Australian teams and have traveled to either Japan or America. Since inception the club has supported many more players that have similarly represented Victoria and Australia in senior baseball and all junior age groups.
Baseball is a wonderful participant sport, which offers a great opportunity for young people and a chance for parents to be actively involved in supporting their children and their club.
This coming season (201-2018) we plan to field 8 junior teams 3 x U12s and 2 x U14s on Friday night and for the more advanced players, 1 x U12s, 1 x U16s and 1 xU18s that play on Sundays. We are also very excited to mention our Aussie T-Ball and Rookie Ball program for 4 to 18year olds. Last season was fantastic with many newcomers participating and we hope to grow this even further with our new recruits. Our Tee Ball and Rookie Ball program is held on Tuesday nights at the club from 5 to 6.pm
